Camden Catholic High School, one of the nation’s most historic Catholic co-educational high schools is celebrating a monumental milestone in 2022: 100 continuous years of musicals. Founded by the Holy Cross Brothers and the Sisters of Mercy in 1887 in the city of Camden, New Jersey, Camden Catholic High School has been renowned around the tri-state region for producing professional-level musicals since 1922.

Over 100 students annually participate in this long-standing tradition, led by alumni directors, choreographers and musicians, many of whom have gone on to lead careers in creative industries and the performing arts. It is estimated that since the first musical was produced in 1922, over 10,000 Camden Catholic students have taken advantage of the opportunity to perform as actors, dancers, singers, musicians, set builders, light technicians, prop and costume crew members. In addition, the performing arts students at CCHS have entertained tens of thousands of audience members in their 100 years of productions - originally on the legendary Lyceum stage at the school’s first campus, in Camden, NJ, eventually moving to the Grandi Auditorium in our current location of Cherry Hill, NJ.

“Students have pushed through adverse world and local events to make sure ‘the show went on’ during World War II, when students were leaving high school to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces, when a tragic fire in 1960 destroyed much of the original school in Camden, and, during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 and 2021,” says school President Mary Whipkey.

To celebrate and acknowledge this monumental anniversary, Mrs. Whipkey, and co-chair Brian Fitzpatrick, a performing arts alumnus of the CCHS class of 1987 (and a Camden Catholic parent), along with many additional alumni, are producing an alumni and student 100 Year Anniversary Showcase performance. This musical revue will encompass all 100 years of musicals in 90 minutes, followed by a Centennial Celebration After Party which will transform the school gymnasium into an event that will ring in the next century of Camden Catholic High School musicals with great grandeur.
